Homework:  Review notes for Place Value Quiz tomorrow AND complete the place value worksheet(both sides).

>>Be careful.  There are a couple that can be tricky.  Think about what we discussed when I handed the homework out.

Back To School Night is this Thursday

September 1, 2016 from 5:30-7:00.

>>Parents will be asked to schedule a parent conference at that time.

Parent Conferences will be October 27th.

Homework:  Finish both base ten model worksheets.  Work carefully and refer to completed ex’s in notebook.  Pay close attention to what is being represented as one whole and be extra careful when the model is missing pieces.

For example.  If one is represented by the flat and you are given three flats and eight units, there should be a zero in the tenths place.

The answer is 3.08!

NOT 3.8 (that is three and eight tenths represented by three flats and eight rods).

Please check online grade book regularly.

It will be up and running 9/1/16.  Below is a link.

If you don’t know your child’s account information,  you can pick up the letter at back to school night or contact the school office at 804-448-0175.

There should be no surprises when the interim or report card comes home.

**Elapsed, end and start time quiz tomorrow.

It will also include 4 basic computation questions. (+, -, x, /).

Students can easily make up their own practice problems to review more tonight or use these below.

This is an end time ex:  Jim arrived at work at 6:45 am.  He was at work for 7 hours and 23 minutes.  When did he leave work? This is an end time problem.

This is a start time ex:  Jim left work at 6:45 pm.  He worked for 7 hours and 23 minutes.  When did he arrive at work?

This is an elapsed time ex:  Jim arrived at work at 6:45 am and left at 3:17 pm.  How long was Jim at work?

Homework:  Study for elapsed, end and start time quiz tomorrow or Thursday.

Cut out place value strips (26 pieces total) and place in plastic baggy provided.  Baggy goes in pocket folder.

If you have not passed your mad minute yet, write your times tables (1-12’s) again tonight.  4 sets due Friday.

Thursday, August 18, 2016

We will begin calculating elapsed time today to the nearest minute when the start and end time are given.

Homework:  Finish elapsed time problems assigned in class.  Refer to completed timeline ex’s in your notebook.  Be neat and work carefully.

>>Remember, you do not count the beginning time as one hour.  No time has passed yet!

Day 3 down!  Students are getting into a routine.

>>Students took their 1st Mad Minute (3 minutes) multiplication facts quiz today.  If they passed with a 90% or better, they don’t need to take the weekly quizzes anymore.  Their graded quiz and a letter from me will be coming home soon.

>If they missed more than 5 (88% or below), then they will begin writing their times tables out M-Th in preparation for the next weekly Friday Mad Minute quiz.  The goal is for them all to pass with a 90% or better by the end of the 1st 9 weeks.

Students are encouraged to use any resources available to them at home to memorize these facts as soon as possible.  I recommend Fun Brain:  Good old fashioned flash cards still work great as well.

Please email me with questions:

Great first day!

Hope the kids enjoyed seeing old friends and meeting some new ones.

>>>>Homework is to get all paperwork completed & returned.

Especially the Pink Profile sheet, Health History report, Code of Conduct (3 pages signed by both parents and students), and any other forms that pertain to your child(free/reduced lunch, Dental, Insurance, etc.).

If any parent(s) in my homeroom would like to be a room parent and come in every Thursday to stuff my home folders, please contact me.  It would take about 1 hour of your time and would really help save time for us in class.
