Homework: Complete the 5 median(middle) questions in your notebook.

Remember! ALWAYS ORDER YOUR DATA FROM L-G 1ST!!!

Don’t forget! If there is an even set of date, you will have 2 values in the middle. That means you have to find the average of those middle 2 values to find the median! REFER TO ALL THE EXAMPLES IN YOUR NOTEBOOK!!

Don’t forget to attend the rising 6th grader Eagles Nest Event at CMS tonight from 6:30-7:30. Lot’s of good information will be provided and it is an opportunity for these kids to meet some of the middle school staff.

Homework: Complete 4 “mean” problems in your notebook.

**SHOW YOUR ADDITION AND SUBTRACTION WORK NEATLY!

When you come in to school tomorrow, I will provide a calculator so you can check your paper/pencil calculations.

Remember! Mean is a fancy word for “average”. To calculate the mean, you add all of the data points given and then divide by the number of data points given.

For ex: What is the mean points scored by Jimmy in his last five basketball games if he scored 8, 15, 23, 13, 21 points in his last 5 games?

Step 1. Add the points. 8+15+23+13+21 = 80 points total

Step 2. Divide by 5(five data points). 80 divided by 5 = 16 points.

Jimmy scored a mean(or average) of 16 points over the last 5 games.

LCES Reminders:

Tomorrow is Picture Day. Please dress nice AND bring in any club t-shirts to change into if you participate in any before/afterschool clubs.

Homework: Order fractions/mixed/decimals worksheet.

PLEASE SHOW YOUR WORK SO I KNOW HOW YOU COMPARED THE NUMBERS. LIMIT THE MENTAL MATH TO AVOID MENTAL ERRORS.

SOME SUGGESTIONS BELOW.

Always start by comparing them to 1/2. That alone will often times help place at least one(or more) in order without doing any paper/pencil work. For any remaining numbers in the set, choose a method/strategy(see below) we have discussed to compare them before re-writing them in the correct order(L-G or G-L).

Compare numerators if the neominators are the same.

Compare denominators if the numerators are the same.

Divide to covert any fraction int a decimal and then stack and compare them as decimals before re-ordering them in their ORIGINAL form.

You can also rename all fractions so they have common denomintors and then just compare numerators.

Remember tomorrow is “Reading Fun In The Sun” so bring in your beach towel and sunglasses to continue our Read Across America Activities.

Sunday, February 24, 2019

Plan ahead to participate each day this week for Read Across America.

Monday: Wear a shirt you can read.

Tuesday: Have some “fun in the sun” by bringing shades/beach towel.

Wednesday: Bring a great book to cozy up with and dress your best for picture day(bring club t-shorts if you have them). NO PJ’s, sorry.

Thursday: ” Hats off to Dr Suess”. Wear your Cat in the Hat or favorite hat. **A Read Across America log will come home today.

Friday: Read Across America Day! Dress like your favorite Dr Suess Character. Be creative and fun with it.

Homework: A handful of students in each class have to complete corrections because they were not done in class. They know who they are because I discussed one on one with each of them what they still had to correct. These corrections are due before announcements tomorrow with all of the work to support their answers.

No Thursday Folders are coming home for my homeroom. But there are a couple reminders:

  1. Tomorrow is dress like your favorite president day.
  2. Next week is Read Across America. I sent them home with a calender of events for each day with a change to Wednesday. It is picture make-up day so NO PJ’s. Sorry.

Homework: Due to a possible weather related delay/snow cancellation tomorrow, students have been told to take their notebooks home and to complete Wednesday science and math review prior to coming to school. They will have to complete Thursday’s science and math review and won’t have time to complete both.

Refer to yesterday’s post for other reminders for the week.

A few updates for the week so everyone is prepared.

  1. No school tomorrow 2/18 for President’s Day.
  2. There will be a substitute teacher in for me on Tuesday 2/19, but the kids should know my expectations for them do not change.
  3. Wednesday 2/20 are class and club pictures. If your child particpates in a club or two(or 3), please send them in with any club t-shirts so they can change into them for club pictutes.
  4. Friday 2/22 is Dress Like Your Favorite President Day.

Homework is to finish (they were given time in class) ordering 4 sets of mixed numbers. There are several completed ex’s in their notebooks. If they were following along and showing all the work as it was modeled, then their notebook should be very helpful.

FYI – I taught the kids to use a few mental math strategies(see notebook for specific ex’s) first. If those don’t work(and they won’t for many of the kids), we discussed how they can find equivalent fractions with common denominators(just like adding/subtracting with unlike denominators) and then just compare the numerators. Work must be shown. If they apply a mental math strategy they have to be prepared to explain.

Tomorrow is an LCES Spirit Day so wear your LCES gear. It is also the 1st BIG BETA Bake Sale. Items will be sold for $.50-$1.00 and the sale will be held in front of the forum from 8:15-9:00.
